Accessibility at Bhakti Yoga DC
At Bhakti Yoga DC, we strive to cultivate a space that is welcoming and inclusive to all. While we recognize that our current building presents physical access limitations, we are committed to transparency, ongoing education, and creating a culture of care and accommodation wherever possible.
Physical Accessibility
Due to the historical structure of our building, our studio is currently not wheelchair accessible. We are actively exploring long-term solutions to address this and will update this page as soon as progress is made.
In the meantime, we want to be transparent so you can make informed decisions about visiting. If you are unable to access our physical space, please reach out to us—we would be happy to recommend a nearby accessible yoga space or explore how we can connect virtually.
d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community
Washington, DC has one of the largest d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing populations in the country. We are currently seeking ways to make our offerings more accessible to this community by learning about:
Visual and written communication support
Accessible emergency communication systems
Workshops or classes with interpreters (by request)
Cultural competency training through the DC Mayor's Office for the Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing
If you are d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing and interested in attending a class or event, please email us at info@bhaktiyogadc.com so we can collaborate on providing meaningful access.
Blind and Low Vision Access
We are exploring ways to better serve our blind and low vision community, including:
Offering guided verbal cueing and hands-on assistance (with consent)
Providing class and event information in accessible formats
Continuing staff education in cultural competency
Please don’t hesitate to let us know how we can support your experience at our studio.
Neurodivergent and Sensory Accessibility
We want BYDC to be a sanctuary for all minds and nervous systems. While we are still learning, we are:
Creating a sensory-friendly guide for our space
Offering quiet spaces when available
Training teachers in inclusive language and trauma-informed practices
Let us know if you have sensory sensitivities, social needs, or would benefit from a pre-visit guide or support person—our goal is to accommodate you.
Immunocompromised and Allergy-Sensitive Community
We respect and honor the needs of those living with immune sensitivities. As part of our commitment:
Incense Sensitivity: When registering for class, students may indicate if they are sensitive to incense. On days when someone has marked this preference, we do not light incense in the studio.
Mask-Friendly Space: We always welcome masking in any class.
Illness Policy: If you are experiencing symptoms of illness, we encourage you to reschedule.
We welcome feedback from our community on how to best care for one another in shared space.
Ongoing Commitment
We are actively engaged in learning and growing. Our team is currently exploring resources through:
DC Public Library’s Center for Accessibility
Competency trainings in Deaf and Blind access
Trauma-informed and neurodiversity-aware yoga education
Indigenous history and cultural humility work
DEI and anti-oppression trainings through community and library partnerships
We understand that accessibility is not a checklist—it’s a culture. If we have missed anything or if you’d like to share your experience, please reach out to us. We are listening.
