Come As You Are

At Bhakti Yoga DC, yoga is more than movement — it is a path of connection, transformation, and devotion. Whether you are stepping onto the mat for the first time or continuing a lifelong journey, you’ll find a community that welcomes you exactly where you are.

We believe true yoga unites the physical and the spiritual. Our classes are designed to strengthen the body, steady the mind, and open the heart — offering both challenge and support along the way. Here, practice becomes a way to grow not just in postures, but in awareness, compassion, and joy.

We hold six core pillars of practice, each offering its own doorway into transformation:

  • Yoga Asana — movement, strength, balance, and creativity in the body.

  • Pranayama — breathwork to calm, energize, and center the mind.

  • Meditation — cultivating inner stillness and clarity.

  • Kirtan — the joyful practice of sacred chanting in community.

  • Satsang — gathering in truth for wisdom, conversation, and connection.

  • Spiritual Education — study and reflection on yoga philosophy and tradition.

Together, these practices form a holistic path: grounding in the physical, expanding through the spiritual, and uniting in the heart.

Yoga Asana Classes

Yoga asana is the physical practice of postures, where breath and movement unite to build strength, balance, and awareness. More than exercise, asana awakens the body as a vessel for energy, grounding us in the present moment while opening pathways for transformation. Through regular practice, students discover greater resilience, flexibility, and inner steadiness that extends far beyond the mat.

At Bhakti Yoga DC, our asana classes are infused with creativity, compassion, and a respect for the roots of yoga. We welcome practitioners of all levels, offering clear guidance for beginners and challenging progressions for more experienced students.

Each class invites you to step into your own practice with openness, curiosity, and devotion — to meet yourself where you are, and uncover the steady joy that comes from moving and breathing in harmony.

Our Asana Offerings:

  • Vinyasa Level 1 — A gentle introduction to flowing sequences, designed to establish safe alignment, mindful breathing, and confidence in foundational postures.

  • Vinyasa Mixed Level — Dynamic and accessible flows that meet you where you are, with modifications for beginners and options for deeper exploration.

  • Vinyasa Advanced (Intermediate & Level 2) — For experienced practitioners, these classes build heat and strength through more complex sequencing, arm balances, and inversions, with space for creativity and growth.

  • Yin Yoga — A slow, meditative style of yoga that targets deep connective tissues, inviting relaxation, release, and stillness. Postures are held longer, encouraging inner awareness and balance.

  • Sound Baths & Yoga Nidra — Restorative practices that combine guided meditation, visualization, and healing sound vibrations to bring the body into deep rest and the mind into expansive awareness.

Meditation & Pranayama

In the yogic tradition, the breath is the bridge between body and mind. Pranayama, the practice of consciously guiding the breath, awakens and directs prana — the vital life-force that animates all beings. Through techniques that balance, energize, or calm, pranayama steadies the nervous system, prepares the body, and opens the subtle channels of awareness. It is both a practice of purification and a gateway, leading the practitioner inward.

Meditation follows naturally, arising when the body is steady and the breath flows with ease. In meditation, the mind is gently stilled and turned inward, cultivating clarity, resilience, and inner peace. Yogis view meditation not as an escape, but as a return — a process of uncovering the true self that lies beyond restless thought. In stillness, we touch the essence of yoga: union of body, mind, spirit, and the divine.

Together, pranayama and meditation are the heart of the inner journey — breath guiding awareness, awareness opening into stillness, and stillness into connection.

Kirtan

Kirtan is a form of sacred mantras, chanted and accompanied by musical instruments and rhythmic drumming. It is one of the fastest-growing genres of music, fusing ancient chants and songs with infectious grooves and catchy melodies. This sacred mantra music is uplifting to the consciousness and can bring one to deep states of meditation and inner joy. Everyone is invited to participate by singing, chanting, dancing and playing instruments.

When we lift our voices in song together, recognizing each other beyond limitations, we invite a kind of tectonic shift globally, socially and within our personal lives.

We have regular kirtan events monthly with various artists, food, dancing, and sacred community bonding.

Satsang & Spiritual Education

Sat means truth in Sanskrit, and sanga means to come together. Satsang is our weekly gathering to discuss spiritual truths, based on Divinity, the Self and how to integrate greater conscious values into one's everyday life.

Every Thursday at 6:45 p.m. we will have an open discussion on the philosophy of yoga, combining Sanskrit mantra recitation with ancient scriptural teachings. Allow the wisdom of the yogis and sages from the past to come alive and be made accessible to you, the urban seeker, explorer and practitioner.

This session is free and open to the public, with no registration necessary.

In addition to our weekly satsang, we host three educational series each year:

  • Foundations of Bhakti Yoga (Fall/Winter) — An introduction to the path of devotion, exploring the essential principles of bhakti, from cultivating the heart’s natural affection for the Divine to integrating devotion into daily life.

  • Bhagavad Gita Study (Winter/Spring) — A guided journey into one of yoga’s most celebrated texts. Through study and discussion of Krishna and Arjuna’s dialogue, we uncover practical insights on duty, devotion, and self-realization for the modern seeker.

  • Stories from the Vedas (Summer) — Ancient tales from the Vedas brought to life, illuminating spiritual truths through narrative and symbolism. These stories connect us to the living heritage of yoga, offering timeless lessons in creativity, courage, and devotion.
